Community

Intentional Christian Community

Life and education is not just about what we do or the things we learn.  More importantly, it is about who we are with.  The 17th Street Student Center invites you to be a part of an intentional Christian community where you will grow spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually.  This is a safe community that will accept who God has made you to be, but will also challenge you to reach your full potential.

Community is not easy, but it is one of the main places where we find growth, beauty, and the truth God has to offer.  To this end, those living at the 17th Street Student Center make certain commitments to God, and to one another to foster community.  These commitments are not made to control, but rather to create an atmosphere of safety, freedom, and room for spiritual formation.

“We have all known the long loneliness and we have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community.”
― Dorothy DayThe Long Loneliness

Spiritual Formation in Community

Christian Character and spiritual development does not happen purely in a weekly Church service, but instead grows through the rhythms of everyday life.  At the 17th Street Student Center you have the opportunity to both participate and lead house worship, prayer services, mentoring, and service projects.  These activities are not forced upon you, but rather you are invited to them, and have chosen to be a part of them by living at the 17th Street Student Center.  Part of being formed spiritually is to become an adult, and to take responsibility for your own spiritual formation.  However, you are not on your own.  There are  pastors, student mentors, and other residents making the journey with you.
